Marvel suggests Thanos’ connection with the Eternals, revealing that he is believed to be the last of the ancient race. Even before he made his debut as an MCU, Thanos’ presence in the universe increased as he tried to collect the six Infinity Stones for his own use. Thanos was teased in some of the early films, but it wasn’t until Avengers: Infinity War 2018 that he became the focus of attention, facing the MCU’s greatest heroes. Avengers: Endgame saw Thanos come to an end in a very definitive way, but that didn’t stop fans from wondering if he could somehow reappear in Phase 4 of the MCU.
The most likely place for some kind of Thanos connection is the upcoming Eternals film. Scheduled for November 2021 after multiple delays, Eternals will introduce the titular team of near-immortal beings to the MCU. For thousands of years, the Eternals have kept to the shadows as they watch over humanity from afar, but a cataclysmic event will see them come forward. The Eternals’ lineup boasts some truly powerful beings, like Richard Madden’s Ikaris and Angelina Jolie’s Thena.
Though he is not confirmed to be a part of the movie, Thanos appears to have a notable connection to Eternals. An interactive MCU exhibit, the Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N., has been making the rounds across the globe, and The Direct was able to visit it when it set down in Toronto (before it was shut down due to COVID). Evidently, one section of the exhibit features new information about Thanos’ background – namely, how it connects to the Eternals. It reads:
“Thanos’ origin is said to be on Saturn’s largest moon, Titan, making him a Titanian in nature. It is rumoured however that Thanos is the last of an ancient and highly sophisticated species known throughout the universe as ‘The Eternals’.”
Fans have known for some time that Thanos is an Eternal, as his father A’lars created the Titanian Eternals. However, what’s most intriguing about the tidbit from Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N. is that Thanos is considered to be the last Eternal. As Eternals will focus on an entire team of them, it clearly is not true, but it suggests the rest of the universe believes it to be. Seeing as the Eternals within the MCU have kept themselves hidden for years, this isn’t too surprising. At the same time, it sets up a rather interesting idea. If the Eternals have been so dormant that no one believes them to exist, what will the world look like when they do emerge?
Thanos’ Eternals connection still doesn’t mean he’ll appear in the film itself, but at the very least, he’ll likely be referenced. Marvel hasn’t revealed what the shocking event is that pulls the Eternals out of the shadows, but Thanos’ Snap (and its reversal) certainly seems like an incident big enough to bring the team forward. Perhaps Thanos’ Eternal heritage will get a shoutout within the movie, thus tying it to the Infinity Saga. As Eternals is still quite a ways away, it might be awhile before how the movie deals with Thanos will be revealed. Until then, though, fans can speculate as much as they want.
